The vowel spectrum of natural sounds relates to fundamental frequency (fo)

Series of sounds produced by a woman with extensive variation of fundamental frequency (fo) in the range of 131–784 Hz (levels given according to musical C-major scale).

The sounds for the closed and mid-closed vowels illustrate a pronounced relation of the lower vowel spectrum and fo. The sounds for the mid-open and open vowels illustrate inconsistent or weak or absent relation of the lower vowel spectrum and fo and point at the nonuniform character of the relation.
